Kenya announced as 4th co-chair of the School Meals Coalition

Kenya was announced as the 4th co-chair of the School Meals Coalition at the meeting, recognizing the country's outstanding leadership in advancing nationally owned, sustainable school meals programmes and its growing influence in shaping the global school meals agenda.

Since 2023, Kenya has expanded its national school meals programme from 1.9 million to more than 3.2 million children and is working towards universal coverage by 2030. The government is also advancing innovative approaches that strengthen the impact and sustainability of school meals, including Home-Grown School Feeding, clean cooking solutions and stronger links between schools and local food producers.

Kenya has played a pioneering role within the School Meals Coalition. As the first country to establish a National School Meals Coalition, it has brought together government, development partners, civil society and other stakeholders to strengthen coordination, mobilize support, and accelerate, progress on policy, financing, and programme expansion. The approval of Kenya's National School Meals Policy in 2026 marks another important step towards institutionalizing and sustaining school meals nationwide.

Recognized as a leader in school meals across Africa in the latest State of School Feeding Worldwide report, Kenya demonstrates how government-led programmes can advance human capital development, economic growth, and resilient food systems. As Co-Chair, Kenya will help drive the Coalition's global ambition and inspire stronger commitments to school meals across Africa and beyond.
